Tiivistelmä
My master’s degree research project focuses on printmaking processes and materials, while emphasising the relationship between tangible and invisible components along with transformations of the various stages creating print-based artwork. With this body of work I explore the relationship between the maker and the material in the context of materiality, mechanical print processes as well as the interpretations of matrices.
Written component of my thesis project presents insights from my research in four parts. Foreword is followed by chapters titled Two Bodies and Borderspace, dedicated to each of the artistic components. Recollection concludes the artistic exploration and working methods.
Two Bodies was displayed at the Kuvan Kevät degree exhibition 04.05-02.06.2019 at
Exhibition Laboratory, Helsinki. The artwork explores bodily contact in the context of print media through the process of lithography and printmaking vocabularly. I engage with surfaces in print discourse and explore meanings as well as transformations they produce in the event of a contact. Informed by etymological and technical interpretations of matrix, and view it as a surface of reproduction, while juxtapositioning the surface of my own female body and a lithographic limestone used for printing. Working method and artistic process is
analysed through subchapters: Connecting bodies, Contact event, Impressions, and
Embodiment.
My second thesis exhibition Borderspace was shown in the Gallery Project Room in
Helsinki 22.02-08.03.2020. The body of work continues to follow an imprinting action in the papermaking process and delve into the agentic intentions of the human and inanimate bodies involved. I explore the methodology, maintenance and thing-power essential to my practice, and further analyse the ephemeral nature of contact as well as the material itself. Through subchapters I delve into these vital aspects of my work, each titled accordingly: Method, Force of Things, Care and Separation.
Printmaking is a complex language. It intertwines materials and materialities, etymological and technical interpretations of terminology involved, together with haptic as well as cognitive bodily connection. Through exploring ideas of material and materiality, along with the meeting points and connections between these elements, I seek to grasp the matter and presence of a touch as well as the inevitable loss of it.
