Koppargrundet ja ”med flera platser” : Luodon vuoden 1722 haaksirikkojen esinelöydöt 2000-luvun uuden tutkimuksen valossa

Abstract

The subject of the article is the findings of two different shipwreck areas, Köbergsgrunden and Koppargrundet, in Luoto (Larsmo) dating to the 1722. The first research reports on this topic date back to the 1870s, but until the beginning of the 2000s these losses have been mixed with each other, which has caused problems in the interpretation and biographies of the objects. Based on written sources from the 1720s, one of the ships was on the way from Stockholm to Kokkola with cargo of merchandise, and the other was transporting buil ding materials, money and passengers with their personal needs from Stockholm to Tornio. Through the means of object research and critical review of research literature, I will show why the information about the finds of objects connected to these shipwreck areas is cont radictory. I explain the objects’ contexts, timing and biography after they were found, and show that the groups of objects I have chosen for closer examination, especially coins, have chronological significance that supports written sources. The object groups studied are coins, silverware, ceramics and drinking glasses, as well as building materials. The study of these artifacts creates a perspective to the incompletely known material culture after Great Wrath 1713–1721, period of Russian occupation of Finland.
